If you need to close your Betterment account, the process is simple. Log in from a web browser and click your name in the header. From there, select "Settings," then "Accounts" from the sub-header.
Once there, you will click the ellipsis to the right of the specific legally-defined investment account(s) within your Betterment account you wish to close. Individual taxable goals will be represented by one single taxable account. You will be asked to answer one of your security questions to close each account.
If the account is funded, you will first need to perform a full withdrawal from the Transfer section. Once the withdrawal is complete, you can then close your account.
There are no trading fees or penalties for closing accounts. Please note that we are required to retain your sensitive information due to FINRA, SEC and US Patriot Act regulations. Your Betterment account will be accessible in the future, as some customers need to view tax forms in future years.
Please contact us at email@example.com if your decision to close an investment account is based on any problems you may be experiencing. If you simply need access to your funds, note that there are no fees for accounts with a $0 balance. Feel free to withdraw and keep any of your investment goals in place until you are ready to invest with us again.
